Democrats on Tuesday night appeared headed toward a wave-election victory in the midterms, scoring upsets in the House and Senate on their way toward taking control of Congress. The biggest wins for Democrats were in North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas, where they won GOP-held seats, along with scores of upsets in House races.
Projections by several decision desks forecast by late Tuesday night that Democrats had won enough seats to retake control of the House, but the Associated Press as midnight approached had yet to declare that Republicans had lost control of the chamber.
Democrats have to win a net total of three House seats to win control of the 435-member chamber. Among the GOP incumbents losing reelection were Rep. Rob Bresnahan Jr. in Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District, Rep. Ryan Mackenzie in Pennsylvania’s 7th district and New Jersey GOP Thomas Kean Jr. in the state’s 7th congressional district.
