Former Democratic Rep. TJ Cox of California began serving a year-and-a-day prison sentence after admitting to a fraud scheme involving hidden bank accounts, diverted business funds, and a $1.5 million loan obtained with falsified documents. Cox surrendered to begin his sentence on Wednesday, May 27, following his conviction last December. His reporting date had been scheduled to allow him to attend his child’s graduation. The former congressman pleaded guilty to two felony counts after prosecutors initially charged him with 28.
Cox represented California’s 21st Congressional District from 2019 until 2021 after narrowly defeating Republican Rep. David Valadao in the 2018 midterm elections. The Central Valley contest was decided by fewer than 1,000 votes and took several days to finalize as additional ballots were counted. Cox served a single term before Valadao defeated him in their 2020 rematch. The criminal conduct described by federal authorities began years before Cox entered Congress and continued during the period leading up to his election.
