Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine, who is not seeking reelection, endorsed Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., this week, marking a rare cross-party endorsement in the lower chamber.Lawler faces a tough reelection bid in a competitive New York House district. Golden endorsed Lawler on Monday, citing Lawler’s bipartisan record and said “he would rather pass a bill with the other party than score a point against it,” The Hill reported.
Lawler, for his part, praised Golden for their work together while in Congress, adding “[w]e share a firm belief that what’s best for the people should come before one’s party, and that if more members on both sides of the aisle took that approach more often, the country would be better off for it.”
In the narrowly divided House, a single seat could prove the difference between Republican and Democratic control. Golden’s own district is typically viewed as a battleground, though his retirement has analysts expecting a Republican pickup.
The Cook PVI currently rates Maine’s 2nd District as R+4.
