    Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s campaign-style tour through early presidential primary states has anonymous officials telling the Washington Post he may be eyeing a 2028 White House bid, a move that would put him on a collision course with Vice President JD Vance.

    Hegseth, 46, flew to Des Moines on military aircraft Monday to stump for GOP Rep. Zach Nunn at the Iowa State Fair, a venue where presidential hopefuls have tested their appeal for decades. The Pentagon justified the flight as necessary “due to the continuous need for secure communications and responsive transportation for national security,” but the trip itself was described by a Pentagon spokesperson as occurring “in his personal capacity.” The Daily Beast reported that officials familiar with Hegseth’s thinking believe the defense secretary has his sights set on the presidency.
