At least twelve people are dead and twenty-three remain missing after a fast-moving wildfire ripped through a wooded area near Los Gallardos in Spain’s Almeria province, making it one of the deadliest blazes the country has seen in years. Most of the victims appear to be foreign nationals, including several believed to be British, who ignored shelter-in-place orders and tried to flee by car or on foot as the fire closed in.
The blaze, which officials say burned through 3,200 hectares, roughly 7,900 acres, moved with extraordinary speed. Andalusian regional leader Juan Manuel Moreno told reporters the fire covered fifteen kilometres in just two hours. He called it “one of the quickest and most complex we’ve seen.”
