David Bozell on Timcast IRL: Why Americans No Longer Trust Legacy Media

Why do so many Americans feel compelled to consult multiple news outlets just to uncover the full story? That question was at the heart of Media Research Center President David Bozell’s appearance on Timcast IRL with Tim Pool on Friday night, where they engaged in a wide-ranging discussion on the growing crisis of trust in the media, the role of ideological bias in shaping news coverage, and the widening divide between legacy media and independent journalism.
Throughout the conversation, Bozell argued that Americans’ declining trust in the press stems from more than just political polarization. Instead, he said, it reflects a media ecosystem that increasingly places agendas ahead of facts. As the discussion turned to why so many people feel the need to compare coverage across multiple outlets, Bozell pointed to what he sees as the core issue: journalism that too often favors ideological framing over straightforward reporting.
.@DavidBozell “What a terrible thing for our whole ecosystem that you feel like you’ve gotta go to the right-wing source or the left-wing source.”@Timcast If you want a lie, you go to the left; if you want the truth, you go to the right. pic.twitter.com/azmYoTQTnv— Media Research Center (@theMRC) August 1, 2026

Reflecting on the state of today’s news landscape, Bozell noted that many Americans no longer trust a single source to provide the complete picture. While acknowledging that every news organization inherently brings its own perspective, he contended that the real problem arises when facts are selectively omitted or framed to reinforce a preferred narrative. Bozell concluded that this loss of public confidence has become one of the defining challenges facing modern journalism.
Later in the episode, the focus shifted beyond media bias to the broader culture shaping many of America’s most influential institutions. Bozell argued that an increasingly elitist mentality within the political, media, and bureaucratic establishment has deepened the disconnect between journalists and the public. He contended that many of these institutions look down on everyday citizens—especially those living outside major metropolitan areas—treating them as people to be lectured rather than listened to.
