On cue, Status’s Oliver Darcy lost his noodle Monday night in writing about the season 59 premiere of CBS’s 60 Minutes on Sunday, screeching about the patriotism outweighing the Trump-bashing in Norah O’Donnell’s lead story about the April rescue of two airmen in Iran, the sausage-making behind securing such a big interview, and how the second piece about the Trump “pardon economy” was supposedly insufficiently Trump-hating.
Elsewhere in the Bari Weiss-hating press, the usual detractors took notice that the Nielsen ratings clocked in at 7.94 million viewers, a 21-percent decline from last season’s premiere (10.03 million).
Showing as much purposeful ignorance as they did in claiming it’d be a MAGA newsmagazine (when it wasn’t), they’re promoting the ratings without considering the weak NFL lead-in and massive change in Nielsen’s metrics that even has the NFL up in arms.
Going first to Darcy, he conceded O’Donnell’s interview with one of the airmen — call sign “Bravo” — “was unquestionably riveting,” but feigned ignorance that “how CBS News obtained the exclusive” was “raised eyebrows.”
Citing “people familiar with the matter,” Darcy hyperventilated that “Weiss personally secured the interview with the help of Hegseth’s wife, Jennifer, a former Fox News producer who has become a de facto Pentagon adviser” and “developed a friendly rapport” that, as per one source, “Bari calls her on her cell phone.”
A reporter calling a source? On their cell phone? What kind of world is this? In all seriousness, schmoozing is commonplace with schmoozing. Big exclusives do not simply happen overnight!
But when it came to the actual substance, Darcy seethed alongside anonymous sources that it lacked a start-to-finish public flogging of the Trump administration (click “expand”):
Notably absent from the report, however, were questions to Hegseth and Caine about the current status of the Iran War. Despite securing interviews with the senior officials overseeing it, the “60 Minutes” piece largely sidestepped the broader context of the war of which the rescue mission was a part. O’Donnell acknowledged that the war is “deeply unpopular” in her opening introductory remarks and that it has claimed the lives of 18 service members, but that was essentially it. At no point did she press Hegseth on why the war has dragged on for nearly seven months despite claims it would conclude in two weeks. Nor did the piece address the war’s direct impact on the American public, most notably rising prices for gasoline and regular goods at home. Instead, it gave Hegseth a platform to celebrate the success of the rescue mission without having to answer tough—but important—questions about the quagmire Trump has ensnared the U.S. in.That glaring omission from the piece caught the attention of former “60 Minutes” and CBS News staffers. One former senior “60 Minutes” staffer told me that not questioning Hegseth about the status of the war was “negligent” and, as a result, called the overall piece “propaganda” for the Pentagon. Another former CBS News senior staffer told me, “I felt like it was a handshake between Hegseth and CBS.” Guy Campanile, a longtime senior CBS News producer and managing editor of “60 Minutes,” who was fired in May with other top personnel at the newsmagazine, told me Monday that he thought the interview with Bravo was a “terrific get.”“But as a viewer I was deeply disappointed that there was an opportunity to ask about the conduct and status of the war,” Campanile told Status. “And that didn’t happen.”
Even though it was incredibly negative toward the administration, he also pitched a hissy fit over the pardon segment from Lesley Stahl was also insufficient to his demands (click “expand”):
Elsewhere in the show’s premiere, correspondent Lesley Stahl probed the pardon economy that has developed in Trump’s Washington. The piece used hidden cameras to capture the infamous pro-MAGA trolls Jack Burkman and Jacob Wohl attempting to sell their pricey services to lobby Trump for pardons. But while the report cast a light on the marketplace for pardons—and those exploiting the system—it avoided shining a bright spotlight on the person who created that very marketplace: Trump. Like the piece before it, “60 Minutes” shied away from meaningfully confronting the Trump-shaped elephant in the room.There was another oddity with the report. Despite the use of hidden cameras, the footage yielded no major “gotcha” moments, as one veteran television news executive noted to me. In fact, it’s questionable whether the piece needed to employ hidden cameras at all, given that Burkman and Wohl are attention-seeking operators who relish being on camera. To that point, when “60 Minutes” requested an interview with the pair, both readily agreed to sit for an on-camera conversation with Stahl.
