On August 26, at 16,400 feet on the Tibetan side of the Nepal-China border, the bedrock under a glacier let go. The rock fell better than a mile, taking the glacier with it. The U.S. Geological Survey, the federal agency that tracks earthquakes, logged a magnitude-4.4 quake, then corrected the record: its instruments had not caught an earthquake. They caught the mountain hitting the valley floor hard enough to register as a magnitude-5.2 shock.
The collapse was the earthquake.
