Former Gov. Roy Cooper, D-N.C., holds a commanding lead over his Republican opponent in the North Carolina Senate race, according to a recent survey.Overall, Cooper earned 53% support among voters in the state in the latest Fox News poll. Former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Whatley trailed with 44% support.
Though North Carolina is typically regarded as a toss up state, Democrats have not won the state at the presidential level since 2008. The Old North State hasn’t had a Democratic senator since Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., who lost reelection to Sen. Thom Thillis, R-N.C., in 2014.
Nevertheless, Democrats have typically performed well in battles for the governor’s mansion. Cooper, for example, served two terms before being succeeded by Gov. Josh Stein, D-N.C. The last Republican governor of the state was Pat McCrory, whom Cooper defeated in 2016.
The N.C. race is expected to be one of the most pivotal in the battle for the Senate in November.
Conducted July 23-27, the survey had a margin of error of +/- 3%.
