Vitamin D deficiency affects 29% of U.S. adults and 41% more fall short of optimal levels, often leaving them exhausted despite healthy lifestyles.
Low vitamin D disrupts mitochondrial energy production, impairs sleep, weakens muscles, and slows immune defenses.
People with darker skin, the elderly, homebound individuals, and those with gut disorders face the highest deficiency risk.
A 25-hydroxyvitamin D blood test is the only reliable diagnosis, with 30 ng/mL considered sufficient and 50 ng/mL optimal.
Sunlight and fatty fish are preferred sources, while supplements should be carefully dosed to avoid toxicity risks above 10,000 IU daily.

Across America, millions of people who eat balanced diets, sleep eight hours a night and exercise regularly still wake up exhausted. The likely culprit isn’t lifestyle; it’s a widespread nutrient shortfall that a simple blood test can uncover. Roughly 29% of U.S. adults are deficient in vitamin D, and another 41% fall short of levels needed for optimal health, meaning most Americans may be running on emptier reserves than they realize.
