House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., opened an investigation Thursday into allegations that Alaska Senate Democratic nominee Mary Peltola’s campaign sought to confuse voters by recruiting a candidate with the same name as the state’s incumbent. The New York Times reported this week that the Peltola campaign helped recruit a retiree named Dan J. Sullivan to run against Republican Sen. Dan S. Sullivan in next week’s midterms.
Comer sent letters to two people believed to have been involved in recruiting the other Sullivan: former Peltola campaign manager Elisa Rios and Democratic operative Jerid Kurtz. The letters seek transcribed interviews with the two Democrats.
“Democrats are the party of fraud. Knowing they can’t win on the issues, Democrats schemed to rig the U.S. Senate election in Alaska by deliberately confusing voters,” Comer said in a statement. “This is part of a broader pattern of misconduct by today’s Democratic Party.
“Our investigation into ActBlue, the Democrats’ online fundraising platform, exposed it illegally accepted foreign donations,” he continued. “Our investigation into rampant fraud in Minnesota’s taxpayer-funded social services programs revealed how Governor Walz and Attorney General Ellison allowed the theft to continue for years. Americans deserve answers about this latest attempt by Democrats to defraud the American people, and we will get them.”
The congressional probe comes the same day Alaska GOP Gov. Mike Dunleavy ordered an investigation into whether the Peltola campaign illegally tampered with the election by recruiting a candidate with the same name to draw votes from the state’s Republican incumbent.
President Trump has called for Peltola to be removed from the ballot and prosecuted over the scandal.
