MANCHESTER, England (CN) — Human rights groups reacted sharply to the U.K.’s proposed overhaul of its asylum system, calling the changes “cruel and unworkable.”
A coalition of charities, including the Refugee Council, Freedom from Torture and Refugee Action, criticized Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s plans to make refugee status temporary and pay up to $53,000 for failed asylum-seekers to leave the country.
