Carnegie Mellon University put a professor on leave and launched a review of her social media history after posts celebrating deaths and telling a critic to “die first, white man” drew national attention, and the university now says her words violate its community standards.
Dr. Uju Anya, a linguistics professor at the Pittsburgh research university, told a social media user to “die first, white man, then ask yourself why I’m dancing” after the user challenged her for celebrating the death of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh. The exchange, which took place on X, caught the eye of Elon Musk, who shared the post and wrote, “This is a real professor at Carnegie Mellon University.” Within hours, internet users had dug up and archived years of similar posts from Anya’s account, a trail of messages cheering the deaths of public figures and daring the university to do something about it.
