It goes without saying that when a Canadian Indian beats a non-Indian person, he’s going to get a pass. And it’s also a given that when a non-Indian beats a Canadian Indian woman, he’s gonna get the book thrown at him. But what happens when a Canadian India beats his Canadian Indian wife?
There was an old British officer who addressed a similar issue by asserting that, “this burning of widows is your custom; prepare the funeral pile. But my nation has also a custom. When men burn women alive we hang them, and confiscate all their property. My carpenters shall therefore erect gibbets on which to hang all concerned when the widow is consumed. Let us all act according to national customs.”
