Canada announces retaliatory tariffs on U.S. after trade talks break down

Canada announced on Tuesday that it would impose tariffs on a wide array of American goods, following Washington’s decision to ramp up tariffs to 50% on key imports. Both moves follow the collapse of trade talks, which have persisted since President Donald Trump declared his “Liberation Day” tariffs last year. The Canadian tariffs will affect about 700 products and reach as high as 50%, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Following the failure of talks over the weekend, U.S. and Canadian leaders have traded barbs over the deal. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, for instance, has said that he feared Trump’s demands would have compromised French language protections in Canada, which Trump has denied.
Trump, for his part, has had harsh words for Ontario Premier Doug Ford and has also floated renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America.
Canada remains one of the few major American trade partners with whom the U.S. has yet to finalize a trade deal.
