California GOP fails to endorse gubernatorial candidate at weekend convention

California Republicans failed to unite behind a single gubernatorial candidate Sunday at the party’s convention, after neither GOP candidate secured the 60% threshold to earn the endorsement, despite President Donald Trump’s support.Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco and former Fox News host Steve Hilton are the two Republicans in California’s jungle primary. The state has an unusual system wherein the top-two voter getters reach the general election, regardless of party affiliation.
The California Republican Party shared a graphic on X that showed Bianco securing 496 votes, Hilton earning 442 votes and 75 people voting not to endorse a single candidate.
“Neither candidate for Governor was able to reach the 60% threshold to earn the endorsement of the California Republican Party,” the party said. 
The decision comes after Trump endorsed Hilton last week, stating he has known the former Fox host for “many years.” 
“He is a truly fine man, one who has watched as this once great State has gone to Hell,” Trump said. “With Federal help, and a Great Governor, like Steve Hilton, California can be better than ever before! Steve Hilton has my complete and total endorsement.”
The vote also comes the same day California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell dropped his gubernatorial bid in light of allegations of sexual misconduct with a former aide. He has denied the allegations.
