Biologists Reconstruct 160-Million-Year-Old Antimicrobial Proteins; Study Reports Activity Against Drug-Resistant Bacteria
University of Oregon biologists have reconstructed antimicrobial peptides from extinct mammals that lived as far back as 160 million years. Laboratory tests found that some of the revived molecules were more effective against drug-resistant bacteria than versions found in modern humans, according to a study published in PLOS Biology on Aug. 25, 2026.
