U.S. federal prosecutors are investigating whether Binance knowingly allowed Iran-linked trading that violated American sanctions, with the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Justice Department’s Criminal Division examining the exchange’s compliance controls and possible awareness of the transactions. The inquiry follows a civil forfeiture action seeking about $61 million in cryptocurrency allegedly tied to Iranian black-market oil sales and routed through accounts associated with the Chinese entities Blessed Trust and Hexa Whale. Binance has not been charged in the investigation or accused of wrongdoing in the forfeiture case, and the company says it maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward sanctions violations and is cooperating with authorities. The scrutiny comes after Binance’s 2023 guilty plea to U.S. anti-money-laundering and sanctions violations, a $4.3 billion settlement, and the imposition of enhanced compliance monitoring.
