Bessent blasts Canada’s Mark Carney for choosing to ‘walk away’ from trade deal

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent blasted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday, claiming the foreign leader “chose to walk away” from a trade deal with the United States. The Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods ranging from alcohol to hockey skates earlier this month after Ottawa failed to sign off on a trade deal. Canada immediately retaliated, with Carney suspending trade negotiations with the U.S. and ordering retaliatory tariffs against American-made products.
Bessent said Canada was “offered the best trade deal of any country on the globe,” but Carney abandoned the deal “at the last minute.”
“It’s unfortunate that he’s not doing what’s best for the Canadian people,” Bessent told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street,” on Monday. “He’s doing best, what is best for the Liberal Party, what’s best for Mark Carney. And in the long run, the other Canadian people are going to see through that.”
President Donald Trump said Sunday that he does not want Americans to import Canadian goods into their businesses, but that Canadian businesses that move their companies to the United States won’t have to worry about tariffs.
