Beijing strikes back: China sanctions 56 U.S. firms in retaliation for Pentagon blacklist
Beijing imposed severe sanctions on 56 American defense and tech companies in response to Washington expanding its military blacklist to include 65 Chinese entities, including Alibaba and Baidu.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce placed 10 U.S. entities on its export control list, prohibiting the export of dual-use items to them and banning any global transfer of such items from China.
The Chinese Finance Ministry sanctioned 46 additional U.S. firms, primarily major defense contractors, barring them from participating in Chinese government procurement or public sector contracts.
The confrontation follows a recent meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping that seemed to signal a diplomatic thaw, which now appears short-lived.
By targeting U.S. rare-earth companies and defense contractors, Beijing aims to use its supply chain leverage to counter Pentagon pressure, threatening global supply lines.
