The good Samaritan who pursued and fatally shot a shooter at a Bend, Oregon, elementary school has yet to be publicly identified. Deschutes County dispatch received a call at 12:59 p.m. local time from a person in a vehicle who said they had been shot at multiple times by a person with a long gun, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said at a news conference Thursday evening, NBC News reported.
Dozens of 911 calls followed that report, and the school was ordered to go into lockdown. Bend police officers arrived at the school at 1:02 p.m. and learned moments later that the shooter had been shot and killed inside the school by a community member.
Krantz said that the community member had seen the suspect entering the school, and pursued the suspect into the school where the community member “engaged him.” It’s unclear how far the shooter got into the school, which has 400 students and 40 staff members, before being neutralized.
Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek praised the courage of the school’s staff members, parents and first responders, as well as the unidentified community member who she said “heroically intervened to stop further loss of life.”
The three children killed in the shooting were ages five, eight and 11-years-old, Krantz said. One teacher was also killed. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were transported to St. Charles Medical Center with critical injuries.
