Audio recordings of Biden interview with 2017 biographer are released

The audio recordings of former President Joe Biden’s 2017 interview with ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer were released Monday after the former president dropped his legal attempt to block it last week.A divided federal court last week denied Biden’s request for an injunction to block the release in a 2-1 split. The court’s majority determined Biden failed to show he would likely succeed on the merits of his request, and the public has a strong interest in evaluating former Special Counsel Robert Hur’s decision not to charge the former president.
The recordings cover approximately 70 hours of interviews between Zwonitzer and Biden, which were related to his 2017 memoir “Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose,” according to CBS News. 
The former president, who was a former vice president at the time, admitted in the recordings that some of the information he was sharing could be classified and even appeared to confess that something he was saying was classified.
“Some of this may be classified,” Biden said on the recording. “So, be careful. I’m not sure … It’s not marked classified but —”
The former vice president also admitted in a 2016 interview that he had documents that the White House was not aware of. 
“I have extensive notes over this period of time,” he said. “They didn’t know I have this.”
The recordings were part of Hur’s investigation into whether Biden shared classified information with Zwonitzer, which he concluded that the former president had. However, the prosecutor declined to bring charges because he believed the jury would see Biden as a well-meaning old man.
