At least five people were killed after a magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck Peru’s Andes region, authorities said Sunday, with more than 20 others injured and roughly 300 residents forced from their homes.According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake hit at 9:24 p.m. local time Saturday. The epicenter was about 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) west-southwest of Sicaya in Huancayo province, and the quake originated at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
Peru’s National Civil Defense Institute said the number of people still missing had not yet been determined.
The tremor caused widespread damage, bringing down or weakening several buildings, including a church and a convent.
Television footage from local news outlets showed devastated families gathered outside heavily damaged homes in Chongo Bajo, one of the worst-affected farming communities. Residents wrapped themselves in blankets as they waited outdoors, while rescue efforts continued. Images also showed livestock trapped beneath collapsed debris.
