Army identifies the two soldiers killed in a Texas helicopter crash

The United States Army released the identities Friday of the two soldiers who were killed in a military helicopter crash in Texas earlier this week, which it stated was because of a “mishap” during a maintenance test flight.The AH-64 U.S. Army Apache attack helicopter went down Wednesday in a field in Salado, Texas. The aircraft and soldiers were based out of Fort Hood.
The pilots were identified as Chief Warrant Officer 2 Deontre T. Huey and Warrant Officer Seth L. Olmstead and were assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division.
Fort Hood said 34-year-old Huey of Killeen, Texas, joined the Army in February 2014 as a motor transport operator and had been assigned to the unit since February 2022, while 25-year-old Olmstead of Belton, Texas, joined the Army in January 2023. He joined as a warrant officer candidate and was assigned to the unit since last October.
“Our hearts and deepest condolences are with the families of the soldiers we lost Wednesday,” Lt. Gen. Kevin D. Admiral, commanding general of III Armored Corps and Fort Hood, said in a statement. “The Army is a family, and a tragedy like this is felt throughout our formations and our community.”
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but officials said the helicopter “experienced a mishap” during a maintenance test flight. No other details were provided.
A safety investigation team from the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center in Fort Rucker, Alabama, will lead the safety investigation of the mishap.
