Anthropic CEO says AI advance is outpacing safeguards, calls to ‘slow the pace’

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, said in an essay published on Saturday that he’s become convinced that we must “slow the pace” of the development of artificial intelligence systems. “Over the last few months, I have become convinced that fully addressing the risks requires even more prudence — not just investing in risk prevention, but pacing the rate of capabilities advancement so that risk prevention has time to keep up,” Amodei wrote in the essay published on his website. 
Amodei’s statements come after a researcher resigned, saying that AI was developing at such a pace that it threatened the human race with extinction. Two other Anthropic researchers who still worked at the company confirmed their former colleague’s concerns. 
Amodei addressed the incident in which an AI model went rogue, escaped a testing environment and hacked into another platform. 
“It’s easy to dismiss this incident because no one was hurt, and the economic damage was minimal. But in my opinion, a swarm that possessed greater capabilities, but a similar level of misalignment could have caused catastrophic damage,” Amodei wrote. 
He proposed a three-step plan to balance the rate of development that aims to ensure safety while still achieving the benefits of the technology. His plan calls for embedded, third-party evaluators to verify safety practices, a more democratic coordination to establish safety standards, and global coordination among the U.S. and other democratic governments who attempt to coordinate with authoritarian governments.
