Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for the establishment of federal regulations for artificial intelligence, according to multiple reports. Amodei has proposed the creation of a new government agency to oversee AI development, citing risks including job displacement and the potential for catastrophic misuse. The push for regulation comes as the AI industry faces increasing scrutiny over safety and ethical concerns.

Despite voluntary safety commitments by major tech firms in mid-2023, Amodei and other executives have argued that such pledges lack enforceable standards, according to Cornelia C. Walther in “Human Leadership for Humane Technology: The New AI: Agency Ignited.” [3] Anthropic, an AI safety startup founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, has publicly positioned itself as a proponent of responsible deployment, including resisting Pentagon demands to remove restrictions on military use of its technology.
