The Congressional Budget Office’s latest report estimates that the U.S. federal deficit will grow to $3 trillion by 2036, while the government accumulates $26.3 trillion in debt over the next ten years. The report forecasts a grim picture for the federal finances over the next ten years, suggesting that the total debt could roughly double in that time.
Notably, the CBO suggests that the deficit will not spike, but rather consistently increase by small amounts each year. It currently projects a $1.8 trillion shortfall for 2026, followed by a similar figure in 2027, and $1.9 trillion in 2028, gradually increasing across the decade.
