    Analysis Links Muscle Loss to 42% Higher Dementia Risk; Obesity Association Varies by Age

    A systematic review and meta-analysis published Sept. 18, 2026, found that sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass and strength, was associated with a 42% higher risk of all-cause dementia, according to the analysis [1]. The same analysis reported that people with sarcopenia faced a 70% higher risk of vascular dementia, which is caused by damage to blood vessels in the brain [1]. The findings were based on 83 cohort studies examining body composition and dementia risk [1].
