    AI Leaders Call for Slower Development as Frontier Models Grow More Powerful

    Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and other technology leaders are publicly calling for a slowdown in the development of the most powerful artificial intelligence systems, according to recent statements and published reports. The calls come as companies including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Meta continue building increasingly capable AI models.

    In an essay published Saturday, Amodei said developing AI was not in question, but the risks associated with it were “serious” and companies and governments must be given time to address them [1]. He proposed a three-point plan that includes independent monitoring of AI models as they are developed, industry-wide regulation and global regulation [1]. Amodei said Anthropic is “unilaterally committing” to one of the strategies outlined in a blog post [2].
