    AI Chatbots Spread Through Congress With Little Oversight, Officials Say

    Congressional staff in both chambers have been cleared to use commercial artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots – including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude – for official work, according to officials and internal documents.

    The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss internal procedures. The tools are being used to write speeches, draft news releases, sort constituent mail, prepare hearing questions and draft amendments, the officials said. Formal chamber-wide rules governing the use of such tools remain under review, according to the officials.
