Attorney General James Uthmeier sent a letter Monday to key lawmakers requesting an impeachment inquiry into a judge who served as the director of strategic litigation for the Southern Poverty Law Center during a period when the organization allegedly funded the KKK with donor money. In his letter, Uthmeier explains that Judge Nancy Abudu, circuit judge on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, served as a top attorney with the SLPC and asks for an investigation to determine whether her actions at the SLPC warrant her impeachment and removal.
A grand jury returned an indictment against the SLPC, alleging it facilitated a decade-long secret operation that funded extremist groups, including the KKK, it was raising money to fight against. While this activity was going on, Abudu was serving as director of strategic litigation for the SLPC.
“It strains credulity to think that Judge Abudu, a senior legal officer at SLPC, wouldn’t have been aware of the organization’s alleged criminal conduct during her tenure,” Uthmeier stated in the letter.
The letter was sent to Speaker Mike Johnson, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee; Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, chair of the House Judiciary Committee; and Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., chair of the House Oversight Committee.
