Abdul El-Sayed’s attempt to score political points with a swipe at Usha Vance has triggered fierce criticism from Michigan Republicans, Indian-American leaders, and women’s advocates who say the attack crossed a line.
Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed came under fire after an X post targeting Usha Vance, the wife of Vice President JD Vance, ignited outrage across party lines. El-Sayed’s message, “So do we think JD is taking Usha with him back in time to meet Papaw, or no…”, was widely seen as a racially charged jab at Usha Vance’s Indian heritage and a needless drag of a spouse into the center of a campaign fight. Leaders from Michigan’s Indian-American community and state Republican officials quickly demanded an apology and signaled plans to make El-Sayed’s comments a campaign issue going forward.
