Democratic Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed blasted his opponent Wednesday night during a fiery debate over former Michigan GOP Rep. Mike Rogers’ accusation that he was tied to the Muslim Brotherhood.Rogers claimed El-Sayed had signed a letter in 2012 that called on the then-Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, to purge Egypt’s police force, according to Fox News.
“[El-Sayed] was passionate about defunding the police,” Rogers said in the debate. “As a matter of fact, he asked the Muslim Brotherhood, excuse me, head Morsi in Egypt, to defund the police there, too. I mean, it’s unbelievable.”
El-Sayed denied the allegation that he was linked to the organization and criticized Rogers for questioning his commitment to the United States’ Constitution, claiming doing so was “beneath” the Republican.
“I am proud of America. I’m proud to be an American. I’m proud of our Constitution that guarantees all of us the right to pray as we choose to pray,” El-Sayed said. “And the question — that you would ask that — I think is actually really quite shameful. As somebody who’s actually served under that Constitution, it is shameful.”
El-Sayed has also taken heat after social media clips from his half-sister resurfaced and claimed their mother was involved in the Muslim Brotherhood in the 1970s. The Democrat has denied having a relationship with his biological mother.
“He keeps raising this question about this association with the organization,” El-Sayed said. “I’ve never been a part because my mom, who’s a nurse in Missouri, it doesn’t make any sense. And it’s actually really quite beneath you, Mike.”
El-Sayed was born in Michigan and raised by his father and stepmother after his parents divorced when he was young. If elected to Congress, the Democrat would get a security clearance by the nature of his position, meaning any potential ties to a terrorist organization may be overlooked.
