Study: Artificial Light at Night Linked to Increased Cardiovascular Risk via Brain Stress Activity

Artificial light at night is associated with increased stress-related brain activity and arterial inflammation, according to research presented at the American Heart Association’s 2025 Scientific Sessions. The study, which analyzed brain scans and medical records from over 450 adults without pre-existing heart disease, used PET/CT imaging to observe markers of brain stress and arterial inflammation. Researchers mapped participants’ nighttime light exposure based on home addresses and found that higher levels of artificial light at night correlated with a higher risk of cardiovascular events over time, according to the report.
