House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told colleagues Wednesday that he has scheduled a 25th Amendment briefing for House Democrats for Friday, which will be led by House Judiciary Ranking Member Jamie Raskin. The meeting comes as Democrats revive calls to impeach President Donald Trump or invoke the 25th Amendment after he warned an entire “civilization will die” Tuesday evening if Iran did not agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. A ceasefire was reached that night.
The presidential cabinet would need to invoke the 25th Amendment, which would remove the sitting president and hand the office to the vice president.
“Shockingly, Donald Trump threatened to escalate his war of choice in a profane Easter Sunday rant and to eradicate an entire civilization,” Jeffries wrote in a “Dear Colleague” letter obtained by Fox News. “We will continue to unleash maximum pressure on Republicans to put patriotic duty over party loyalty and join Democrats in stopping the madness.”
The call comes after House Democrats impeached Trump twice at the end of his first term, but the Republican-led Senate declined to remove him from office. Democrats have been more hesitant to try impeachment in the second term.
Former Georgia GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has also pushed the president’s cabinet to invoke the 25th amendment.
