The Iranian envoy to the United Nations on Tuesday asserted that the country would not accept a temporary ceasefire, but was willing to negotiate a permanent end to the conflict.“Iran stands ready to engage constructively with all genuine diplomatic efforts, including [through] Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt, as well as diplomatic efforts by China and Russia, and support any credible initiative capable to — of bringing about the sustainable end to this unlawful and unwarranted war,” Amir Saeid Iravan said to the United Nations Security Council, according to The Hill.
The comments come ahead of a Tuesday evening deadline from President Donald Trump for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face the destruction of its civil and energy infrastructure.
Pakistan has operated as an intermediary for negotiations between Iran and the U.S. amid the conflict. Islamabad on Tuesday pressed Trump to postpone his deadline for two weeks to reach an agreement.
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran failed to reopen the strait.
“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again” Trump posted on Truth Social. “I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something (sic) revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?”
“We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World,” he added. “47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!”
