The Democrats have rejected a counter proposal from the White House on funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), making a partial shutdown almost certain as the stopgap bill to keep the department running is set to expire this weekend. The DHS appropriations bill remains the last of the 12 annual appropriations bills that Congress has not approved. The legislature ultimately approved a continuing resolution to allow for more negotiations..
Democrats initially sent a list of 10 demands to the White House to approve the bill, though the White House instead sent a counterproposal. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., stated Thursday that the White House proposal “did not address our concerns,” according to The Hill.
Democrats have sought a litany of concessions on immigration enforcement, including body cameras and judicial warrants, in the wake of the deaths of two anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) demonstrators in Minneapolis, Minn.
