President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed an executive order asking AI companies to allow for a voluntary government review of new models before releasing them to the public. The order falls well shy of an earlier version that would have set the review period at 90-days before release, Politico reported. Instead, the order calls for voluntary review just 30 days before a product goes public.
Initially, Trump was set to sign the order on May 21, but he rejected the original draft.
Trump signed the order in privately, without the usual fanfare and livestream. The 2024 Trump campaign gained considerable support from the tech sector, with Silicon Valley moguls even fundraising for him.
But AI has increasingly attracted scrutiny from the government and the public, including from the expansion of data centers needed to accommodate the increasingly advanced models and their widespread use.
