The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday sided with the Trump administration and blocked a California law that required federal immigration agents to display identification while engaged in enforcement operations.California’s “No Vigilantes Act,” the court found, violated the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution. A lower court previously declined to issue an injunction, though the ruling on Wednesday remanded the case to that court, with instructions to block the law.
“Because the United States has shown that § 10 of the No Vigilantes Act violates the Supremacy Clause, it has also shown that both the public interest and balance of the equities tip ‘decisively in . . . favor’ of a preliminary injunction,” the decision read.

California lawmakers passed the legislation in response to President Donald Trump’s ongoing mass deportation efforts.
