Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will receive all documents from the latest round of negotiations to end the war in his country, following days of talks between Kyiv’s delegation and representatives of U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukraine’s chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, said.
“We have worked for several days in the United States together with Andrii Hnatov with representatives of President Trump. I am grateful for the constructive work,” Umerov said in a Dec. 8 post on X. “Today, we will provide the President of Ukraine with full information on all aspects of the dialogue with the American side and all documents.”
Trump said on Dec. 7 that Zelenskyy hasn’t read his proposed plan to end the violence between Kyiv and Moscow.
“I’m a little bit disappointed that President Zelenskyy hasn’t yet read the proposal, that was as of a few hours ago. His people love it. But he hasn’t, Russia’s fine with it,” he said ahead of hosting the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington. “Russia is, I believe, fine with it, but I’m not sure that Zelenskyy’s fine with it. His people love it, but he hasn’t read it.”
In a Dec. 7 post on X, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine deserves a dignified peace.
“Whether there will be peace depends entirely on Russia – on our collective pressure on Russia and on the sound negotiating positions of the United States, Europe, and all our other partners,” Zelenskyy said. “Russia must be held accountable for what it is doing – for the daily strikes, for the constant terror against our people, and for the war itself.”
Zelenskyy has a packed schedule on Dec. 8.
He is due to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in London, then head to Brussels for discussions with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Antonio Costa.
The Kremlin has said it is waiting to understand the results of the Ukrainian–U.S. negotiations over the weekend, which followed discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner in Moscow last week.
“As you know, detailed work was carried out in Moscow during the meeting between Putin and Witkoff and Kushner,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Dec. 8, according to Russian state news agency TASS.
“Then, based on the results achieved in Moscow, Witkoff and Kushner worked with a delegation of Ukrainian negotiators led by [Rustam] Umerov. Now it is important for us to understand the results of this work.”
He declined to comment on Trump’s statement that Zelenskyy was currently unfamiliar with the contents of the peace plan, saying that Moscow does “not know exactly what the differences of opinion are.”
