President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order reclassifying cannabis.The president issued the order, calling the move “common sense.” The order removes cannabis from the list of Schedule 1 drugs, though it will remain illegal at the federal level, according to the New York Post.
At present, 24 states have legalized cannabis for recreational use while 40 permit it for medical purposes.
The effect of this is that state-legal pot companies can deduct business expenses for tax purposes, and this will expand research opportunities, according to the outlet. 
“The facts compel the federal government to recognize that marijuana can be legitimate in terms of medical applications when carefully administered,’ the president said.
