The White House told reporters Friday that France agreed to move the upcoming G7 summit to better align with the United States’ schedule after the initial date coincided with President Donald Trump’s birthday and a White House UFC match. The meeting was initially scheduled for June 14-16 but will now take place in Evian, France from June 15-17, per Politico. Trump’s birthday is June 14, which is the same day as the Ultimate Fighting Champion match at the White House.
“As the leader of the free world, our partners believed that President Trump’s attendance at the G7 Summit was essential,” a White House spokesperson told the outlet. “They kindly shifted dates to accommodate the U.S. president’s schedule.”
France has not confirmed that the new date was to specifically accommodate the United States and the martial arts match, but said it was “the result of our consultations with G7 partners.”
The European country assumed the G7 presidency on Jan. 1. The summit last year took place in Canada.
The UFC match will take place on the South Lawn of the White House and will be part of the United States’ year-long 250th anniversary celebration. More events related to the fight will take place on the National Mall and the Lincoln Memorial.
