The White House on Friday joked over the arrest of journalist Don Lemon over his involvement in a demonstration in which participants interrupted a church service.”When life gives you lemons,” the White House posted, making a pun on his name. The account also included a picture of Lemon in the church.
Lemon was arrested Thursday evening, his lawyer confirmed. A judge previously rejected the Department of Justice’s request for a warrant, though the DOJ subsequently convened a grand jury.
Lemon’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, has defended Lemon’s role, arguing he was involved in legitimate journalism.
“Don has been a journalist for 30 years, and his constitutionally protected work in Minneapolis was no different than what he has always done,” Lowell said. “The First Amendment exists to protect journalists whose role it is to shine light on the truth and hold those in power accountable. There is no more important time for people like Don to be doing this work.”
