Gu Aling is not done with America. Last weekend, the Chinese Olympic medalist performed grand marshal duties at San Francisco’s Lunar New Year Parade. Seated next to her mother and wearing a red princess dress, Aling rode a Mustang convertible, waving at the adoring crowd—American style.
Her American name is Eileen Gu, and she was born and raised in California. Her white American father does not seem to be a great presence in her life, but her mother, a woman with high-level connections in China, is a towering figure. She encouraged Aling to perform for her homeland—an unheard-of situation for an Olympian who could have easily made it on Team USA.
