The Norwegian Nobel Institute pushed back against suggestions that Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado could transfer her recent Nobel Peace Prize to President Donald Trump, stressing that the award cannot be shared, transferred, or reassigned once it has been granted. The institute said the Nobel Peace Prize can’t be transferred to someone else after its recipient is decided. The prize also cannot be revoked after it is issued.
The clarification follows comments by Machado indicating she would like to give or share the prize with Trump, citing his role in a U.S.-led operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Maduro is currently facing drug trafficking charges in New York.
Even before Maduro’s capture, Machado dedicated the prize to Trump.
“I certainly would love to be able to personally tell him that we believe — the Venezuelan people, because this is a prize of the Venezuelan people — want to give it to him and share it with him,” Machado said during an interview on Fox News on Monday. “What he has done is historic. It’s a huge step toward a democratic transition.”
According to a statement from the Nobel Institute, the prize “can neither be revoked, shared, nor transferred to others” and “once the announcement has been made, the decision stands for all time.”
Trump is expected to meet with Machado in Washington this coming week.
