A Utah jury Monday found children’s book author Kouri Richins guilty of murdering her husband, Eric Richins, by giving him a drink containing a lethal dose of fentanyl in 2022.The jury deliberated for three hours before convicting Kouri Richins on all charges, which also include attempted murder, forgery and insurance fraud related to his life insurance coverage.
Prosecutors painted the author as unhappy in her marriage to Eric Richins, and she was allegedly seeing someone else. She also reportedly was millions of dollars in debt, which motivated her to kill her husband and collect the money from his life insurance policy, according to CNN.
Prosecutors also argued that Richins committed the murder by mixing her husband a Moscow Mule cocktail that contained nearly five times what is considered a deadly amount of fentanyl, according to CBS News.
Defense attorneys argued that prosecutors could not prove how the fentanyl entered Eric Richins’ body and that their client was wrongly accused of the murder and the attempted murder that took place on Valentine’s Day in 2022.
Kouri Richins, who wrote a children’s book on grief to help her sons cope with the death of their father, now faces up to life in prison without parole. She is expected to be sentenced on May 13.
