USDA expands SNAP restrictions: Sugary drinks and candy banned in four more states

Kansas, Nevada, Ohio and Wyoming join Arkansas, Idaho and Utah in banning sugary drinks and candy from SNAP purchases under USDA-approved waivers, with Ohio targeting sugar-sweetened sodas and Wyoming prohibiting candy and sweetened carbonated beverages.
The policy, part of the Make America Healthy Again initiative, is framed as combating obesity and diabetes, disproportionately affecting SNAP recipients, with Kennedy and Rollins arguing taxpayer funds should incentivize “real food.”
The American Beverage Association (ABA) and critics argue the bans stigmatize low-income families, ignore systemic issues like food deserts and fail to address corporate-driven processed food addiction.
Critics question whether restrictions alone improve health or simply shift purchases to other unhealthy options, calling instead for ending subsidies for corn syrup, expanding fresh food access and dismantling food apartheid.
Kennedy aims for all 50 states to adopt similar SNAP restrictions by 2027, escalating the debate over government control vs. nutritional sovereignty amid a $120 billion taxpayer-funded program.
