The U.S. Gerald Ford arrived in Crete on Monday, following its deployment to the Middle East, which was cut short due to an extensive fire. The vessel previously sustained significant damage to its internal plumbing, leading to a flood of the bathrooms and parts of the living quarters. The mid-March fire began in the ship’s laundry.
The Ford will now spend an undetermined amount of time in the Cretan port of Souda Bay, The Hill reported. It was one of two aircraft carriers the U.S. deployed to the region as part of the ongoing Iran war, along with the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln.
The Pentagon previously approved the deployment of an amphibious ready group (ARG) and a Marine expeditionary unit (MEU) to the region, which typically includes several warships and roughly 5,000 Marines.
