U.S. “doomsday planes” take to the skies amid rising nuclear war fears

The U.S. military’s so-called “doomsday planes,” the E-6B Mercury, have conducted several flights in recent days as tensions rise following the outbreak of war in Iran on Feb. 28.
Flight-tracking data on March 2 showed launches from the Gulf Coast and Offutt Air Force Base, with one aircraft landing at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, a key site linked to U.S. strategic operations.
The aircraft’s main mission, called TACAMO (“Take Charge and Move Out”), allows U.S. leaders to send orders to nuclear-armed submarines worldwide even if traditional communication systems are destroyed.
Equipped with high-frequency communication systems and long trailing antennas, the planes can contact submarines deep underwater and remain airborne for extended periods to maintain military communications during a crisis.
First introduced during the Cold War, the E-6 fleet remains a vital part of U.S. nuclear command infrastructure and can also serve as an airborne command post under the “Looking Glass” mission to help coordinate intercontinental ballistic missile launches if ground command centers are disabled.
