President Donald Trump this week warned that NATO’s future would be in jeopardy if the member states failed to aid the U.S. in its efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The critical waterway has been essentially closed for weeks due to the ongoing war with Iran, which has targeted oil tankers attempting to leave the Persian Gulf. Trump, for his part, has vowed to reopen the strait and called on NATO allies to contribute naval forces to the operation.
“If there’s no response or if it’s a negative response I think it will be very bad for the future of NATO,” Trump told the Financial Times. “It’s only appropriate that people who are the beneficiaries of the strait will help to make sure that nothing bad happens there.”
France, this week, decided against sending warships to the strait, according to rfi. The UK, for its part, has insisted it is looking at options to assist in reopening the strait, but has not committed to sending warships, the BBC reported.
